Cleveland's Necrobiome arrived in 2024 bringing death metal with a biological horror concept to a city with deep roots in the genre's American development. Their putrid, groove-laden approach fits naturally alongside the Rust Belt's long extreme metal tradition.
Necrophagia was formed in Wellsville, Ohio in 1983 by Frank "Killjoy" Pucci, making them one of the earliest death metal bands in the United States alongside Possessed and Death. Their debut album Season of the Dead (1987) documented a raw, horror-obsessed approach to extreme metal that earned the band a devoted following in the underground tape-trading scene. The band was revived in 1997 with Phil Anselmo of Pantera contributing under the pseudonym Anton Crowley, and continued releasing material until Killjoy's death in 2018; a posthumous final album, Moribundis Grim, appeared in 2024.

Cincinnati's Nobody have been cultivating post-black metal introspection since 2018, threading atmospheric density and emotional weight through the black metal framework in ways that feel genuinely searching. Operating under a Bandcamp presence shared with the striking "videsuicide" handle, they push into the more melancholic and expansive post-black territory, where blast and tremolo give way to texture and mood.
Cincinnati's Nogothula entered the blackened death metal space in 2022 with a sound built on the most corrosive qualities of both parent genres — the cold tremolo hostility of black metal fused with death metal's crushing low-end and blasting intensity. Ohio's underground metal scene has historically punched above its weight, and Nogothula continues that tradition by pushing the extremes of a hybrid genre rather than softening them. The project's name carries a mythic, incantatory quality that matches their dense and ritualistic approach.
Toledo, Ohio's Notara came together in 2019 to deliver death/thrash metal with a precision and ferocity that punches well above the band's years in existence. Their approach fuses the surgical riffing of classic death metal with the velocity and aggression of thrash, carrying on the Midwest's tradition of no-frills extreme metal built on pure craft.
